HSBC Fellowship Program

HSBC - The world's local bankLeave behind the four walls of your classroom and embark on a unique journey of discovery and action.  Thanks to HSBC Bank USA, N.A., you can join an Earthwatch-supported scientific research team examining the impacts of climate change.

You do not need any special skills to join an expedition; just a sense of adventure and a willingness to lend a hand. Adventurous and innovative educators who have an interest in the impacts of climate change, sustainability, and life-long learning are encouraged to apply.

Fellowships

HSBC Bank USA, N.A. will provide five fellowship opportunities through Earthwatch for educators in new HSBC branch communities nationwide. Selected fellows will be placed on a 2007 Earthwatch climate change expedition in North America. The fellowship covers all costs associated with the research including accommodations and a stipend for transportation to the research site.

Earthwatch expeditions are one-to three-week field research projects that will give you the opportunity to enhance your classroom instruction with new scientific skills and knowledge while you renew your sense of wonder about the world.

These HSBC teacher fellowships will support your professional development, enhance science and technology education within your classroom, and further your understanding of climate change issues.

Eligibility
Teachers of all levels in 5 targeted HSBC communities are eligible. Fellowships are awarded by Earthwatch through a competitive process. Fellows are assigned to climate change research projects according to their interests, skills, availability, and research team needs.  Please see the application for details.

Fellowship Requirements
If you are selected as a recipient of one of these fellowships, you will connect with your classroom and community "live from the field" using satellite and internet technology during the expedition.  While in the field, Earthwatch will equip you with technology to allow you to communicate and teach as you contribute to the research efforts.

As part of your fellowship, Earthwatch will provide a stipend of $1,000 to implement a community service project of your design to further engage the students in your school and members of your community. The fellowship will also provide your school a grant to pay for substitute teacher fees during your absence.  Your acceptance into the HSBC Teacher Fellowship program will be celebrated at HSBC's branch opening in your community.
