Welcome, students!  Ready to have an adventure that makes a difference?  With Earthwatch, you can get out of the classroom, get off the bus, and get into your world!  Whether you apply for a fellowship or join an expedition with a student group, you will experience science and nature in a whole new way.

Are you a teacher or guidance counselor who knows a student up to the social and intellectual challenge of a Student Fellowship?  Nominate them today!

Student Fellowships

Earthwatch student fellows get to go—for free!--on one of more than ninety Earthwatch expeditions around the world to work with top scientists and other students in the field. While there, you’ll learn how to do field research and help find answers to the most challenging environmental issues of our time—and you’ll be making a difference for endangered animals and their habitats. You’ll get to use some of the latest technology (like GPS and radio-transmitters for tracking animals), learn about cutting edge research areas (like climate change), and work in places most people never get to see (like an Icelandic glacier or a Costa Rican volcano).

You don’t need to have done anything like this before, and you don’t need to have taken any particular science classes to go. All you need is curiosity, an ability to work hard as part of a team, a thirst for adventure, and a desire to make a difference.

Through the generosity of individual donor and foundations committed to global sustainability and learning, Earthwatch is able to provide several fellowship programs for students each year.  Students need only submit one application to Earthwatch each year.  They will be considered for all programs for which they are eligible.

Student Challenge Awards Program (SCAP)

Celebrating more than 20 years as Earthwatch’s premier student program, SCAP offers students gifted in arts and humanities an opportunity to spend two intensive weeks during the summer at a scientific research station.  The aim of this program is to stimulate students’ curiosity about science and technology; therefore students with little or no exposure to experiential science learning are encouraged to apply.

Nominate a student

Student applicants must be nominated by an educator or guidance counselor within their academic community.  Nominators should be confident in a student's ability to handle the social and intellectual challenges of working - perhaps far away from home - on a small research team composed of talented high school students, graduate students, and scientists.
