Often, students can receive academic credit for participating on Earthwatch expeditions. If you are an undergraduate or graduate student, you should look into earning academic credit BEFORE the expedition.
Earthwatch provides each volunteer with an Expedition Briefing specific to their project. These documents contain detailed information that will aid you in designing a course based on your school's guidelines. Expedition Briefings identify the history and goals of the research project, the background of the researcher, volunteer assignments, daily schedule, a reading list, and much more.
We suggest you start planning early if you are seeking academic credit.
For Independent Study, Elective, Internship or Field Experience:
- Speak to your advisor, department head, study abroad coordinator, or internship office about setting up an independent program that will provide you with unique educational benefits.
- Obtain a copy of the Expedition Briefing to aid you in the development of your course syllabus and reading list. Work with your academic advisor to ensure that your course proposal meets your school's academic requirements.
Note: You can view and print Expedition Briefings by selecting the option "download PDF briefing" for the specific expedition you are considering joining.
- Upon request, Earthwatch will provide you with a signed certificate of completion that you may submit to your school. The certificate will identify the expedition title, principal investigator, location, dates, and volunteer hours contributed.
- Submit all completed documentation to your advisor.
