LA Student Fellowship Program

This year’s application deadline has now passed. Please check back for 2013 opportunities later this spring.

Earthwatch’s innovative LA Student Fellowship Program launched in 2011 and offers students from underserved schools and communities in Greater Los Angeles the experience of a lifetime.

Students will spend 1-2 weeks during the summer of 2012 working alongside leading scientists and participating in hands-on environmental research at one of at least six different research sites across the country.

Earthwatch is seeking a diverse group of ‘rising star’ high school sophomores and juniors from across Los Angeles County. The ideal student will have limited experiences in the sciences and be a creative thinker and a motivated learner who is eager to increase his or her understanding of science and nature. This Student Fellowship Program is designed to give students a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to look at science and the environment in a new way. By getting out of the classroom and experiencing real field science firsthand, students not only acquire new skills and knowledge, but they also expand their world view and understanding at the same time.

The program also supports the research and educational efforts of leading scientists by providing grants and opportunities to mentor talented students.

Earthwatch’s LA Fellowship Program will allow students to:

  • Work with and be mentored by inspiring, leading scientists
  • Discover how science and technology advance our understanding of the world
  • Connect with talented peers from across Los Angeles County
  • Engage in science unlike any way they could in a classroom
  • Be exposed to different geographic areas and cultural communities

*Students must be nominated by a teacher or guidance counselor to be eligible for this opportunity.
