Earthwatch Institute has an important role in actively contributing to the development of aspiring young scientists-particularly those from underrepresented groups. Each year, Earthwatch selects three young Earthwatch supported scientists, researchers who are currently working towards their doctorate or masters degree or have gained it within the last 5 years, to receive a Young Scientist Award. This award recognizes their dynamic research abilities, dedication to local involvement, and contribution to Earthwatch's mission. The one-time monetary award of US$2,000 is intended to enhance the impact of the scientists' Earthwatch project and help raise awareness of their work, both among fellow scientists and lay people.
