Combining varied personal and professional backgrounds, this diverse group serves to further the Earthwatch mission by acting as ambassadors to our constituents and helping set strategic priorities for our work.
International Board of Directors
Whitney L. Johnson, Chair, is a Principal with PlumRiver LLC, a provider of B2B and Sales Automation software focused on the Footwear, Apparel and Sporting Goods industries. PlumRiver's mission is to bring efficiencies to the relationship between manufacturer and their independent, specialty retail customers. Prior to co-founding PlumRiver LLC, Whit founded, and was CEO of Lion Rock International, a major sourcing and manufacturing company with offices in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Boston as well as manufacturing plants in Costa Rica and customers such as J Crew, Timberland, North Face and LL Bean. One of the divisions of this company, called Natural Sources, focused on producing and marketing apparel made from 100% organic cotton, a growing and environmentally beneficial segment of the textile market. Before founding Lion Rock, he was the Senior VP of Karhu North America, in charge of their Outdoor Division, which included the Merrell Footwear and Trak and Karhu cross country ski brands. In that capacity he worked, in addition to his duties in the US and Canada, with a variety of subsidiaries and distributors throughout Europe as well as the home office in Finland. Whit graduated from Dartmouth College where he studied international economics and was captain of the ski team. He was a member of the US Cross Country Ski Team. Prior to college he attended Phillips Academy, Andover after having grown up in Switzerland and Germany. Whit currently resides in Wellesley, Massachusetts with his wife and children.
Professor David Macdonald, CBE, Vice Chair,
is the Director of the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) at Oxford University, which he founded in 1986. He is Oxford's first Professor of Wildlife Conservation, holding a Senior Research Fellowship at Lady Margaret Hall. David Macdonald's concept was, and remains, to undertake original research on aspects of fundamental biology relevant to solving practical problems of wildlife conservation and environmental management, and thus to underpin policy formation and public debate of the many issues that surround the conservation of wildlife and its habitats. He has published over 300 papers in refereed international journals, and written or edited more than a dozen books, of which the most recent is Key Topics in Conservation Biology. David Macdonald has supervised over 60 successful Oxford doctorates and is committed to outreach to a wide public and has twice won the Natural World Natural History Author of the Year Award (with Running with the Fox and with European Mammals). He is also known for his award winning TV documentaries, such as The Night of the Fox and Meerkats United. In 2007 BBC Wildlife magazine nominated him amongst the top ten most influential living conservationists. Amongst other things he is currently a Visiting Professor at Imperial College, Chair of Darwin Advisory Committee, Chair of Natural England's Science Advisory Committee and board member, a Trustee of WWF-UK, and council member of the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. He won the Dawkins Prize for Conservation and Animal Welfare in 2005, he was awarded the American Society of Mammalogists' Merriam Prize for research in mammalogy in 2006, and in 2007 The Mammal Society of Great Britain's equivalent medal. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in March 2008.

Whitney L. Johnson, Chair
Ruth C. Scheer, Vice Chair, is the retired executive director of the Cabot Family Charitable Trusts, which make grants each year of roughly $3 million to a variety of national and international non-profit organizations. Ms. Scheer serves on the Advisory Council of the Harvard School of Public Health's Center for Population and International Health. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Automobile Association of Southern New England. Ruth is a Trustee of the New England Conservatory of Music and a Governor of the Museum of Fine Arts School. She is also a Trustee of Collage, a contemporary chamber music ensemble and a Director of the Castine (Maine) Historical Society. Ruth is past chairman of the board of Governors of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, chairman of the board of the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park and is a member of the Chilton Club, and the Harvard Musical Association.

Philip L. Weickhardt, Chair. From 1997-2001, Mr. Weickhardt was the CEO of Orica Limited (formerly ICI Australia), a publicly listed company, which is the world's largest commercial explosives supplier and Australia's largest chemical company. Prior to this, Mr. Weickhardt spent 26 years in a wide variety of roles within the ICI Group, including 7 years in the U.K. early in his career. Mr. Weickhardt is currently an Adjunct Professor at the Melbourne - Mt. Eliza Business School and is a Commissioner with the Productivity Commission (an independent policy research group of the Federal Government). He is also Chairman of another not-for-profit, and is a member of the Board of a Cooperative Research Centre focused on molecular plant breeding. Mr. Weickhardt has a M.S. from the University of Melbourne in physical chemistry, and attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in 1990.
