The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK)

The Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment (ACE UK) represents the UK's leading beverage carton packaging manufacturers. ACE UK members include beverage carton producers Tetra Pak, SIG Combibloc and Elopak and producers of paperboard such as Stora Enso, and Korsnäs.

ACE UK’s mission is to:

  • support environmental policies, activities and legislation in the field of packaging, waste, recycling and recovery, consistent with the requirements of the UK market
  • contribute to UK environmental policy, activities and legislation related to beverage carton packaging, in particular the promotion of renewable resource
  • communicate the beverage carton's environmental credentials

In September 2010, ACE UK and Earthwatch met to discuss this challenge and begin to explore the potential for a joint collaboration around the theme of sustainable packaging.

“ACE UK members and their suppliers are committed to ensuring responsible forestry management practices and rigorous traceability throughout the supply chain”, says, Richard Hands, Chief Executive of ACE UK. “By partnering with Earthwatch, we aim to understand better the services that sustainable forest management practices can bring, particularly with regard to combating climate change and other ecological issues. Together we will be exploring opportunities to share and enhance our knowledge, whilst at the same time demonstrating to others the environmental benefit of using wood fibre as a renewable resource.”

In order to help bring together policymakers, NGOs and companies who depend on forest products, Earthwatch will be chairing a policy roundtable organised by ACE UK.  We welcome the opportunity to work with ACE UK members, and their suppliers, to ensure that the forests from which they source raw materials are responsibly managed, and to improve knowledge and commitment to act on environmental issues.

Through partnerships with organisations like ACE, we can reach out to consumers, connecting them to environmental impacts and giving them an opportunity to make a difference.  We look forward to exploring how our relationship with ACE UK can make a lasting difference to forests and communities worldwide.
