Research Results
A camera trap effort in Emas National Park uses 238 camera trap units and has identified 10 individuals including some jaguars (Panthera onca) that were previously unidentified suggesting that migration is taking place despite the isolation of the Park.
Preliminary results of jaguar scat samples for dietary compostion show peccaries and giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) to be found frequently in the scats. Giant anteaters, peccaries and tapirs comprised almost 95% of the biomass consumed.
Jaguar conservation has led to the restoration of mandatory reserves by many rural property owners in the region, and, most recently, to the voluntary creation of a private reserve connecting the park with the valley of the Araguaia River. Affected habitats are the typical Cerrado vegetation forms - grass and scrubland, swamps, and gallery forest.
