Medical and Evacuation Insurance

Your Earthwatch expedition contribution automatically includes 24-hour emergency medical and evacuation insurance cover.  This coverage is valid in the country of your Earthwatch expedition and during international travel to and from your expedition.

This insurance is provided for all volunteers, regardless of other existing coverage. This allows Earthwatch to provide comprehensive assistance in an emergency situation by having all volunteers covered by the same insurance and evacuation service provider.

For a list of frequently asked questions regarding this insurance please see either Travel under 50km or Travel over 50km depending on how far your expedition is from where you live.

Please Note: The coverage for those travelling less than 50km from their place of residence is limited. Therefore, it is strongly advised that volunteers have up-to-date ambulance insurance.

Additional Insurance Recommendation

Earthwatch Australia will fully refund your expedition contribution in the unlikely event that Earthwatch Australia cancels your expedition for any reason.  However, Earthwatch does not reimburse airfares or costs associated with cancelled flights or other tours you may have booked.  You are strongly advised to buy flexible or refundable plane tickets and to take out travel or trip cancellation insurance.

Depending on the level of coverage you purchase, trip cancellation insurance will help cover your airfare and Earthwatch contribution if you need to cancel your expedition due to medical or other covered reasons.  Levels of reimbursement for cancelled airline tickets or ticket change fees will vary depending on what type of trip cancellation policy you purchase.  Note that volunteers with pre-existing medical conditions are encouraged to explore their coverage thoroughly.
