Fundraising with a Touch of Green

Earthwatch recently received an unexpected donation from Deloitte after their Sustainability Committee presented 40 summer vacationers across the firm with the opportunity to fundraise for Green Charities.

Each business unit conducted their own fundraising activities such as encouraging a casual dress day (with a touch of green), a baking drive, raffles and even a game of skill.

The money raised went towards initiatives at both Earthwatch and Green Cross Australia.

Annika Chee, a summer vacationer at Deloitte, explains how Earthwatch came to receive the donation.

"My peers and I were given a challenge to raise as much money as we could for a charity of our choice. We took the initiative of fundraising within our office for a 'green' charity in order to promote a sustainable way of living," she said.

"The Earthwatch Institute was one of two charities chosen to be the recipients of our efforts since we believe that education is one of the most important channels to achieve the behavioural change necessary for a sustainable existence."

Earthwatch's Partnership & Supporter Relations Manager, Caroline Bayer, says the donation from Deloitte was unexpected but greatly appreciated.

"It was fantastic to see the Deloitte vacationers thinking of new ways to raise funds for environmental charities. Donations allow us to continue vital field research and the donation from Deloitte will see 100 percent going directly towards our conservation research programs."

Sarah Louise Brown, Senior Consultant for Deloitte, explains the benefits to Deloitte when fundraising for charities; "It was great to be able to work with the Sustainability Committee to raise funds and awareness for such worthwhile initiatives."

"The vacationers have all certainly learnt a lot along the way about fundraising, teamwork, baking (!) and of course; environmental sustainability."
