Lloyd Figgins
Head of Global Field Safety - Extn: 843
Lloyd joined Earthwatch in February 2009 as interim Head of Field Management, with a particular focus on Safety Management and Training. Prior to coming to Earthwatch, he worked as a Safety Manager for a leading Adventure Travel Operator and has also worked as a Tour Leader, Operations Manager and a Police Officer.
Lloyd, who is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, has extensive knowledge of developing realistic and robust Safety Management Systems having travelled to over 50 countries and holds an OCR Level 3 in Off Site Safety Management. Lloyd is also qualified as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and works (in his spare time) as a 1st Responder for the Ambulance Service.
Away from work, Lloyd is a keen sportsman and enjoys playing rugby and cricket, as well as trekking, camping and travelling.
Rowena Millard
Field Management Assistant - Extn: 821
Rowena started at Earthwatch in August 2006 as the Field Management Assistant which involves database management and administration of research projects managed by Earthwatch (Europe). She is also a member of Crisis Management Team, has undertaken Land Rover Training and Wilderness First Aid Training and has been awarded the OCR Level 3 Certificate in Off-site Management. She has been on two Earthwatch projects - Armenia's Architectural Heritage and Roman Fort on Tyne (Teen Team).
Before Earthwatch, Rowena had a number of jobs including working as a Travel Consultant for Overland Expedition Tour Operators, managing a "bucket low fares" shop in London in the 1980's, and working for Oxfordshire's Countryside Service.
She has done a lot of travelling in North America and "behind the Iron Curtain" and has lived in Ireland for many years. On her return from Ireland, she gained qualifications on a pilot scheme teaching young children and then went on to get a BSc in Environmental Science at Oxford Brookes University in 2001.
Rowena has a large family and two adult children, Ciara and Aidan and also Jacob (who she adopted). She enjoys spending time with friends and family, all water based activities, walking, camping, photography, live music, theatre as well as learning about the natural sciences. Her many ambitions include learning to fly a Tiger Moth Bi-plane, go ice-diving, study further (marine science), and work in elephant conservation before she retires to a beach hut by the sea!
Emma Sharp
Projects Manager - Extn: 868
Emma joined Earthwatch in January 2009 as Projects Manager, coordinating research projects managed by Earthwatch Europe and liaising with Earthwatch Scientists.
Prior to this, Emma was the New Zealand Director of an international student volunteering organization, managing conservation and community development programmes. She has more recently worked at the UK Learning and Skills Council and undertaken an internship at UNEP in Bangkok. She has a BA in Geography and Maori Studies and a BSc in Biology and Environmental Science. She gained an MSc (Hons) in Geography and Environmental Science in 2004, studying glacial landscapes in the beautiful South Island of New Zealand. In the UK she has studied Global Development issues and holds a Certificate in Management.
Emma has lived in 9 countries but settled for a decade each in Singapore and New Zealand and has travelled extensively throughout SE Asia and Europe. She loves doing outdoor activities in picturesque environments and enjoys spending her free time tramping (that's Kiwi for trekking/ camping!), cycling, cooking meals for friends and taking photographs.
Vicky Potts
Projects Manager(six month secondment), Field Management - Extn: 834
Vicky joined Earthwatch in April 2006, as an Engagement Officer helping corporate employees such as HSBC and Zurich, prepare for Earthwatch expeditions and setting up their own community conservation projects on their return from the field. In February 2009 Vicky joined the Field Management team as a Projects Manager and now helps to coordinate Earthwatch Europe projects. She has been on two Earthwatch Projects, Wildlife Enhancement on a Working Farm, Uk and Cheetah, Namibia.
Vicky gained a BSc in Zoology then graduated from Reading university with an MSc in Wildlife Management. Before joining Earthwatch Vicky was a countryside assistant for South Oxfordshire District Council. This position involved providing administrative and operational support for the countryside and forestry services. She has also worked as a research assistant on the Farne Islands studying the foraging and breeding behaviour of terns and puffins.
She is a keen conservationist and in her spare time she enjoys carrying out various kinds of voluntary work, including wildlife monitoring and practical tasks. She currently volunteers for the local Widllife Trust where she participates in dragonfly surveys. At present Vicky also works as a part time ecologist helping in bat and newt surveys. Vicky is happily married to Jon and spends the rest of her free time walking, going to the theatre and relaxing.
