Tom Berry
Manager, Volunteer Programmes - Extn: 870Tom Berry

Tom joined Earthwatch in April 2007 as a Volunteer Advisor. He now manages the Volunteer Programme in Earthwatch’s European office. He is responsible for ensuring that Earthwatch expeditions have sufficient volunteer support, and that all volunteers from Europe, Russia, the Middle East, and Africa have a positive and rewarding Earthwatch experience. He is also the point of contact if you wish to organise a school or university group expedition on an Earthwatch project.

Between completing a Masters degree in International Development and joining Earthwatch, Tom worked for the South African educational charity BEFSA, and Oxford-based African social justice group Fahamu. He has travelled and volunteered widely in Africa and has a strong interest in the history, politics and culture of the continent and how these interact with current environmental pressures.

Claire McCarroll
Volunteer Advisor – Extn: 845Claire McCarroll

Claire joined Earthwatch in October 2009 as a Volunteer Advisor. She is responsible for dealing with volunteer enquiries, recruiting volunteers, advising people when it comes to choosing between expeditions and briefing them in preparation for their in-field experience. She is your first point of contact with Earthwatch should you wish to get involved as a volunteer.

Claire is no stranger to volunteer work. In 2006 she spent her summer conducting a baseline survey for grassroots NGO, KACCAD, in Uganda, and in 2008 she worked as a volunteer animal keeper at Quito Zoo in Ecuador and as a Conservation Worker at The Utila Iguana Conservation Station in Honduras. Her volunteer history also includes joining one of Earthwatch’s Dolphins of Greece expeditions prior to joining Earthwatch. Claire graduated from Cambridge University with a Geography degree in 2007. At university she discovered her passion for travel, spending her summers exploring Europe and East Africa. After graduating she managed a whole 9 months in an office, before heading off to The Middle East and then South and Central America. She is now a big fan of llamas and all things Nicaraguan, and has a new-found aversion to panpipes and, somewhat predictably, mosquitoes.

Claire has a pet Bearded Dragon called Monty (who may well be a female in need of a name-change) and a mild addiction to caffeine. She is happiest when planning her next adventure, baking brownies or decorating the odd Christmas Tree.
