Programmatic Partners

Below is a list of partners who are assisting in the delivery of our projects:

Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG)

Earthwatch is working with CRIG to examine the sustainability of different cocoa cultivation techniques in Ghana, and create eco-tourism opportunities for local farmers. This project is run in close collaboration with the Nature Conservation Research Centre and the University of Reading.

CRRUCoral Reef Research Unit (CRRU)

In partnership with CRRU, Earthwatch has developed a coral reef, mangrove and seagrass research project on the island of Silhouette in the Seychelles. This project has been fully supported by the Mitsubishi Corporation.

Darwin InitiativeDarwin Initiative

Earthwatch receives funding from the Darwin Initiative for flamingo conservation throughout the lakes of the rift valley and Ramsar site management at Lake Bogoria, Kenya in partnership with the University of Leicester.

Fauna & Flora International

Through the British American Tobacco Biodiversity Partnership, Earthwatch, FFI and the Tropical Biology Association are working to assess and manage the impact of agricultural cultivation on biodiversity.

FSCField Studies Council

Earthwatch and the Field Studies Council have received a grant from the Partners for Environmental Co-operation in Europe (PECE) initiative, supported by DEFRA's Environment for Europe Fund, for a programme of capacity-building for biodiversity conservation across Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Through this programme, 28 conservation practitioners from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Iran, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkmenistan will join a three week research and training team in Belarus. The team will have two core elements: experience of participatory scientific research recording botanical and wetland biodiversity in Belarus and facilitated training sessions on biodiversity conservation techniques, community engagement and environmental education.

Kenya Wildlife ServiceKenya Wildlife Society (KWS)

Earthwatch's long-term research in the Rift Valley has led to a partnership with KWS to help implement the Ramsar Convention in Kenya and manage and use vital water resources sustainably. An Earthwatch team at Lake Elementeita in April 2005 carried out an ecological assessment of the lake to evaluate the need for designation as a wetland of international importance. The research team presented their finding to KWS, who subsequently submitted the lake for designation as a Ramsar site.

Mount Mulanje Conservation Trust (MMCT)

Earthwatch works in collaboration with David Nangoma, Carl Bruessow, Cornell Dudley, and Julian Bayliss who are affiliated with the MMCT looking at the mountain ecology of Mount Mulanje in Malawi. Of particular importance is an effort to provide research-based information that promotes well informed forest management decisions for the managers and resource users through an Ecological Monitoring Programme, EMP. Earthwatch sends a number of Capacity Development teams each year onto this project to assist in the gathering of data which will feed into the EMP.

Napier University

Earthwatch works with Dr Mark Huxham at Napier University, Edinburgh, to undertake mangrove restoration and management projects, led by local communities in Kenya and Sri Lanka. The community mangrove restoration project in Sri Lanka is fully supported by Zurich Financial Services.

NCRCNature Conservation Research Centre (NCRC)

Earthwatch works with the NCRC to support a number of field research projects in Ghana, including looking at the sustainability of different cocoa cultivation techniques in Ghana, create eco-tourism opportunities for local communities through wildlife sanctuaries and elephant migration routes from Ghana to Burkina Faso.

NPTSNature Protection Trust Seychelles (NPTS)

Nature Protection Trust Seychelles is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation which aims to conserve the unique biodiversity present in the Seychelles. Earthwatch works in collaboration with NPTS on the project Coral and Coastal Ecology of the Seychelles. The project is helping to collect vital data from the scenic islands of Desroches and Silhouette to establish a baseline of the animals living in the shallows and intertidal zones, and data concerning the community structure of corals, coral distribution and abundance and the associated fish diversity.

Rufford Maurice Laing FoundationRufford Maurice Laing Foundation

Earthwatch has received a grant from the Rufford Maurice Laing Foundation for the training of conservation practitioners in Africa and Eastern Europe on the Earthwatch participatory field research model.

Tropical Biology AssociationTropical Biology Association

Through the British American Tobacco Biodiversity Partnership, Earthwatch, FFI and the Tropical Biology Association are working to assess and manage the impact of agricultural cultivation on biodiversity.

UNESCOUNESCO

Earthwatch works in partnership with UNESCO to help protect and manage World Heritage sites through participatory research and capacity-building. Through the UNESCO programme Earthwatch will provide field training opportunities for UNESCO staff and site wardens.

University of Leicester

Earthwatch receives funding from the Darwin Initiative for flamingo conservation throughout the lakes of the rift valley and Ramsar site management at Lake Bogoria, Kenya in partnership with the University.

University of Reading

Earthwatch works with the University to examine the sustainability of different cocoa cultivation techniques in Ghana, and create eco-tourism opportunities for local farmers. This project is run in close collaboration with national and local partners, the Nature Conservation Research Centre and the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana.
