New weather station monitors climate in India’s Western Ghats mountains
Further development of the collaboration between the Indian Institute of Science (IIS), Earthwatch and HSBC has seen the opening of a new weather monitoring station.
The new weather station, which started functioning in July, is located at the M. E. Society’s Arts and Science College at Sirsi, in the Western Ghats mountain range, near to Earthwatch’s regional climate centre.
Students from the college’s Department of Geography will monitor and record weather parameters, using equipment provided at the weather monitoring station. This includes thermometers for recording maximum and minimum temperature, dry and wet bulb thermometers for recording the relative humidity of air, a rain gauge for measuring rainfall and an evaporimeter for measuring daily evaporation
The station was formally handed over to the Principal of the College at a ceremony attended by students, members of staff from the IIS, and members of the College Committee.
