TEACHERS FIND INSPIRATION AMONG WILDLIFE AND WOODS
Please note that applications are now closed.
Thirty-six teachers will have an exciting opportunity to experience cutting-edge environmental research work as part of the Earthwatch Educator Expeditions 2009.
Earthwatch is inviting UK-based secondary level teachers of geography, science and citizenship to apply to join one of two scientific research projects during the 2009 summer holidays. Two teams of teachers will be based at Wytham Woods in Oxfordshire. Successful applicants will help Earthwatch scientists to research the effects of climate change on this ancient woodland.
The third team of successful applicants will be based at Upton Farm, also in Oxfordshire. Here, the teachers will design experiments to research the effects of modern farming practices on the habitats, feeding-patterns and distribution of the UK's beloved bumblebee and other native wildlife.
Experienced facilitators will help the teachers link the research and their experiences on the projects to the curriculum. The teachers will work together to devise educational resources for use in the classroom, and these resources will be made available for others to use. On return from their expeditions, the teachers will be eligible to apply for £150 grants to kick start their own environmental initiatives locally.
Programme Manager Caroline Rodgers of Earthwatch, says, "As well as giving teachers the chance to contribute to vital conservation research, the programme helps them inspire students to become responsible environmental citizens. It is also an exciting and unique Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunity; Earthwatch teachers gain an insight into current environmental research and practical techniques, and return with refreshed ideas for the classroom, as well as new contacts and friends."
The Earthwatch 2009 Educator Programme is funded by ICAP, the world's premier interdealer broker. The programme, now in its 12th year, has allowed more than 600 teachers and educators to experience hands-on conservation research on Earthwatch expeditions.
Educator Expedition placements include a fully-funded place on one of the projects mentioned above, plus comprehensive briefing materials and preparation guidance from a designated member of Earthwatch staff. All accommodation, food and transport on the project is provided, as well as an allowance for travel to the expedition site.
The closing date for applications is 10th April 2009. For an application form and further information email education@earthwatch.org.uk, or visit our website.
