Oxford Brookes University staff development grants 2004-2006
1) In support of the initiation of the ‘United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development' in January 2005, and in recognition of the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on co-operation between Oxford Brookes University and the Earthwatch Institute (Europe)1, the University has decided to make available a number of grants for personal staff development to both non-teaching and teaching staff. These grants will allow successful applicants to join selected field projects that tackle issues related to the sustainable development of environment and society. Suitable field projects include many Earthwatch field projects as well as similar expeditions organised by the Royal Geographical Society, Operation Wallacea and others.
2) These personal development opportunities are offered in support of the University's strategic commitment to environmental sustainability, and the fifth of the core values described in the University Mission and Strategy Statement. This concerns corporate social responsibility, specifically "Social responsibility - ensuring the understanding and care of people and stewardship of environmental and public resources". These values are implicit in the University's drive to reduce its ‘ecological footprint', its negative environmental impacts, and in the notion of educational quality enhancement - improving practice in learning, teaching and assessment and building links between teaching and research, where the ‘Greening of Education' and ‘Education for Sustainable Development' are seen as key activities. In addition, the fellowships will aim to help staff build personal skills in self-reliance, team work, problem-solving as well as the ability to promote wider awareness of sustainability issues across the University.
