Earthwatch launches Queen's Guide award
See the world and make a difference whilst working
towards your Queen's Guide Award!
Are you a Girl Guide working towards your Queen's Guide Award? Are you looking for that extra special residential experience? Perhaps you are stuck for something to pick for your community action clause?
Earthwatch is very excited to be able to offer Queen's Guides opportunities for both! If you choose to participate on one of our incredible expeditions in the UK or worldwide, you will be able to count it towards the Residential Section of your Award, and on your return, by taking up one of our grants, you will be able to work towards your community action clause.
An Earthwatch Field Project can count towards your Queen's Guide Award in 2 ways:
Residential Experience:
Through taking part in one of Earthwatch's 140 projects worldwide, you could make a hands-on contribution to vital scientific research, learning new skills, and developing a deeper understanding of some of the world's most pressing environmental problems. You might find yourself helping to protect endangered leatherback turtles in Costa Rica, or investigating climate change in Australia. No prior experience is necessary - all you need is a thirst for adventure and a desire to make a difference.
Earthwatch projects usually consist of teams of between 4 and 15 people depending on the project. Although the majority of volunteers travel alone, Earthwatch expeditions are a safe way to travel to remote or unfamiliar places as you will be met at the rendezvous site and will soon feel part of the team.
Just as with other residential opportunities for the Queen's Guide Award you will be expected to organise your own travel and pay for any expenses. Earthwatch asks for a share of costs to be paid to help cover the cost of running the research project. This includes all your training in the field, briefing materials, your food, accommodation and on-site travel as well as all of the various costs of field research (field permits, equipment, etc.). Your contribution does not include your travel so bear this in mind when choosing a project! UK projects can cost between £165-£665 and Earthwatch can offer advice on fundraising should you wish to venture further afield!
Community Action:
Earthwatch projects are also an ideal opportunity for you to fulfil your Community Action clause. On your return from the expedition, you may be eligible for one of our grants to help you undertake a project in your community. Earthwatch can also provide you with a great deal of advice and support in your chosen project - gained through years of supporting community action.
