Make a splash for EarthwatchWorld Water Day has passed, and World Ocean Day (June 8) approaches...with all these watery themed days around us, why not get involved in a bit of themed fundraising? Have some fun, and help to support Earthwatch's Ocean's Appeal at the same time.

The world's oceans and the animals and people that rely upon them for survival are under enormous pressures from unsustainable human activity. Funds raised from our Ocean's Appeal will support research projects which are seeking answers to the problems caused by overfishing, disruption from commercial shipping boats and coastal development, and the effects of climate change on the ocean.

So get involved in a watery themed event, and designate the funds you raise to the Earthwatch Ocean's Appeal. Please just make sure you let us know this is where you want the money to go when you send in your funds.

Take your pick from our ideas below, or think of one of your own. You can also consult our fundraising help pack for advice.

  • Sponsored swim/row/sail - ask your friends and family to sponsor you for taking part in a watery sporting challenge.
  • Sponsored beach/canal/pond clean - not only will you be raising money for a good cause, but you'll be cleaning up the environment too.
  • Ocean themed party - why not host a disco night with an ocean themed fancy dress? You could also serve up cocktails like Sex on the Beach or Blue Lagoon.
  • Rubber duck race - pooh sticks with a watery twist! Sell the ducks to friends, find a river and set them free. Please be sure to collect them after the race - you should always leave no trace from your fundraising events.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean - hold a movie night and charge for entry. You could even have a quiz afterwards based on the film. And yes, we know there are plenty of awesome ocean based movies on offer other than Pirates of the Caribbean, but you can't beat Johnny Depp for an evening's entertainment!
  • Anyone for dinner? Host a ‘Come dine with me' style event, but everyone must serve a main course made up of (sustainably sourced) fish. Guests make a donation to the host for each evening. Contact the Marine Conservation Society to get your very own Good Fish Guide.

Team Earthwatch gears up for Hairy Legs Challenge

With spring in the air, a team of crazy Earthwatchers from our office here in Oxford are getting in training for the Hairy Legs Challenge. It's not a strange leg-shaving contest, but a duathlon consisting of a 5km cross country run, 20km off-road bike ride, followed by another 5km run. Please sponsor Team Earthwatch and help us to raise funds for our Oceans Appeal. As ever, your support is much appreciated.
