Earthwatch scientists succeed in protecting the green lungs of Europe. They have conducted the first botanical survey of Yelyna, the largest raised peat bog in Europe. The Belarus Ministry of Natural Resources announced the creation of a national peat bog monitoring programme that will ensure plant hotspots at Yelyna are protected.

Scientists from the Cetacean Research and Rescue Unit (CRRU) in Banff, Scotland, and volunteers from Earthwatch were dazzled this week when they were joined by over 300 common dolphins in the Outer Moray Firth. This is the first time the team have ever recorded common dolphins (delphinus delphis), a warm water dolphin species, in these coastal waters in 10 years of studying cetaceans in the North Sea.

After a six-year campaign, conservationists are celebrating the designation of Bahia de los Angeles as a protected biosphere reserve. Hundreds of Earthwatch volunteers contributed to this success by helping to gather data on the Black Sea Turtles of Baja expedition.
