Scientists from Earthwatch celebrate after the International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreed to divert shipping lanes off the southern coast of Spain in order to avoid important bottlenose dolphin foraging grounds. When passing through the Alboran Sea, merchant ships and fisherman will be required to travel 20 miles further south off the coast of Almeria.

The Annual Earthwatch PI conference was held from 1-3 March in Cambridge, Boston, US. The conference was attended by over 70 Principle Investigators and project staff, representing around 60 Earthwatch projects worldwide. Projects represented included Marine Mammals of Brazil, Dolphins and Whales of Moray Firth, Puerto Rico's Rainforest, Echidnas and Goannas of Kangaroo Island and Ghana's Manatees.

Archaeologists working in Peru have revealed that the 13 towers of Chankillo, in the Casma Valley of Peru's coastal desert, mark the existence of sun cults that predate the Inca by 1,700 years. This research, carried out by former Earthwatch archaeologist Ivan Ghezzi (Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru) and Clive Ruggles (University of Leicester), is published in Science today.

Earthwatch scientists working on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands are celebrating a ten-fold increase in nesting leatherback turtles and a 20-fold increase in hatchlings produced. The news is welcomed after 25 years of conservation and monitoring efforts.
