Last week the UK governments leading scientist, Professor Sir David King, warned that an irreversible climate disaster was imminent. If carbon dioxide levels continue to rise, the Greenland ice cap will melt and global sea levels will rise by 6-7m in as little as sixty years time, leaving much of Britain underwater. What is the fate of our planet if our climate changes and what, can a songbird do to help?

Earthwatch Institute, the international environmental charity, is celebrating this week after winning a prestigious British Archaeological Award. Earthwatch was recognised as "best sponsor of archaeology" for its unceasing 12 years of support for the Roman Fort on Tyne excavation project which operates in South Shields, on the river Tyne in Northeast England.

A decade-long botanical study, carried out by scientists from the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and assisted by more than three hundred Earthwatch volunteers in the highland forests of western Cameroon, has remarkably discovered fifty endemic plant and fungi species and varieties new to science, it was announced today.

As a result, Earthwatch and Dr Joyce will be expanding their ongoing research project in the coastal wetlands of Estonia, one of the new EU Accession States.

Dr Chris Newman, the leading scientist on the Earthwatch Mammals of Wytham Woods project, is celebrating the success of the recent badger census, which took place in Wytham Woods, Oxfordshire, this month. Volunteers from around the county turned up in their droves to show their support.
