Broadcaster Andrea Catherwood joins Earthwatch scientists in Greece

Award-winning broadcaster and radio and television presenter Andrea Catherwood became an Earthwatch volunteer when she joined Earthwatch scientists in Greece this summer.

Andrea, who chaired the annual Earthwatch debate at the Royal Geographical Society in November 2008, became a volunteer on the Earthwatch expedition Dolphins of Greece in June.

Marine biologists Dr. Giovanni Bearzi and Joan Gonzalvo Villegas are carrying out research into the population dynamics, habitat use, movement patterns and behaviour of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in the Amvrakikos Gulf. Andrea, who has written a feature about the Earthwatch project for the Independent on Sunday newspaper, took part in daily boat surveys and helped to record the numbers, group compositions and activities of dolphins. She also helped to match and catalogue digital images of dorsal fins back at the field station in Vonitsa.
