Inspiring young people between the ages of 16 and 17 from Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom to take a life-long interest in the environment.
Overview
The Earthwatch ‘Inspiring the Next Generation’ programme, supported by Saudi Aramco will provide young people from the United Kingdom and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia an opportunity to participate in one of two amazing Earthwatch projects.
Those selected will attend the Earthwatch research projects Whales and Dolphins of the Hebrides in the UK or Samburu Communities and Wildlife. Both projects take place in July/August 2010. The programme will cover project costs (including accommodation and food) and travel to and from the project to meeting points in the UK and Saudi Arabia.

What else do I need to know?
Journal writing competition:
These expeditions offer a unique opportunity to travel to a new environment, make new friends, develop team work and leadership skills, and learn more about the environment. To record and share their experiences, each participant will be required to write a journal. The journal that gives the best personal account of the expedition will be awarded a prize and might even be published on our website.
Project conditions:
On the expedition, participants will live communally alongside young people from different backgrounds, countries, and cultures. All participants must be prepared for basic living conditions and to play an active and enthusiastic role in team life.
Samburu Communities and Wildlife involves sharing single-gender, basic rooms. There will be a cook to prepare your meals from a largely western menu. Due to the rural nature of the project it may be difficult to cater for strict dietary requirements.
Whales and Dolphins of the Hebrides involves living 24 hours a day onboard a sailing boat. Participants will sleep in single gender shared cabins and will prepare meals as a team. Due to the limited space for cooking onboard the boat, it may be difficult to cater for strict dietary requirements.
On both expeditions, competition winners will be supported by specially trained teen facilitators, with one facilitator for every six young people.
Am I eligible?
Eligible participants must be residents of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia or the United Kingdom.
All participants on the trip must be either 16 or 17 for the entire duration of your Earthwatch Expedition i.e date of birth between 9 August 1992 and 26 July 1994.
In order to ensure the safety of all competition winners, participants must meet the health and fitness requirements for their project. Participants on the Whales and Dolphins of the Hebrides team must also be able to swim.
Funding
The competition is kindly supported by Saudi Aramco. If you are selected, you will receive a fully funded place on an Earthwatch Expedition.
