Oceans Appeal

Donate to Earthwatch's Oceans Appeal and help us raise £25,000!

About 70% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. Yet, despite the vastness of this natural resource, our oceans are under severe threat from unsustainable human activity, such as:

  • Overharvesting of fish stocks
  • Oil exploration and production
  • Commercial shipping and recreational boating
  • Coastal development
  • Pollutants and waste
  • Climate change

Humans have caused these problems. But we can and must be part of the solution.

There has never been a more important time for Earthwatch's work researching the threats to our oceans. By supporting our Oceans Appeal you will directly help Earthwatch scientists understand the causes of and solutions to unsustainable exploitation of our marine environment.

Your donation could be used to:

Support existing ocean research projects

Help pay for vital research equipment and supplies or the costs of training and mentoring teams of volunteers to work alongside Earthwatch scientists on ocean research projects.

In 2009, we will fund and manage 16 ocean research projects, all of which are in need of funding. These projects range from studying whales and dolphins in Scotland to carrying out coral reef surveys in the Caribbean, and conserving sea turtles in Costa Rica.

Develop new ocean research projects

Help fund the development of new research projects focusing on the sustainability of coastal ecosystems, which support the greatest marine biodiversity but are most heavily impacted by human activity.

Between 2010 and 2012, Earthwatch plans to develop 5 new ocean research projects studying threatened coastal ecosystems, such as estuaries, salt marshes, lagoons, shorelines, kelp forests, and seagrass beds.

Increase the impact of our global oceans research and engagement programme

Help build the capacity of Earthwatch to work with our network of marine scientists to broaden the impact of our oceans research on conservation policy and practice and on public attitudes and beliefs about threats to our oceans.

Earthwatch works to share as widely as possible the findings from our oceans research projects to inform conservation policy and management. We seek to expand the experiential education value of our ocean expeditions and to design models for engaging new audiences in oceans research.

We need your urgent personal financial support. Time is of the essence.
