The research is carried out on community owned land, split into various regional areas known as conservancies. Each conservancy is controlled by the Samburu people. On the Medicinal Plants project the research team picks up a local Samburu elder each day, enlisted to act as a guide and helper in identifying medicinal plant species in the survey areas, and to make sure the team acts with responsibility and respect for the environment and community.
