The abundance and distribution of medicinal plants in the region is assessed using a stratified random sampling method where transects of 100 metres) are laid at intervals across the landscape, marked out using a Global Positioning System device (GPS), and then sampling is conducted within five 10 x 10 metre quadrats along each transect. Here, Earthwatch researchers Richard Mariita and Stephen Mwangi gather data, checking their exact geographical position and altitude on the GPS.
