Medicinal plants used by local people can be consumed without determination of plant biological efficacy, which is important in the understanding of which species should be retained for future use. Many of the plants treat microbial infections, but the specific species targeted and useful dosages are still being established. Such studies are essential for the future of the medicinal floral resources of the Samburu region. Volunteers record information including plant species and local name and take GPS readings for all sampling sites. Some species are photographed for identification and samples removed for chemical and biological testing back in the laboratory.
