Tests to identify the active principles of the medicinal plants are carried out at a laboratory in the Wamba Catholic Hospital. Identified plants species are crushed or chopped into smaller pieces and dried, then soaked in a variety of organic solvents for purposes of dislodging active organic principles which are subsequently tested in-vitro against known pathogenic bacteria. Several professional volunteers such as pharmacists and doctors have assisted the Earthwatch research team to help in the evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy. Plant extract testing has shown many of the plants are indeed effective against the micro-organisms known to cause the certain diseases, including malaria. The latest results were published in the journal Pharmacognosy Magazine in 2009 and several more papers are being written for submission to various medical and pharmacological peer-reviewed journals.
