A moran shows off his manhood with a display of exceptional jumping at a traditional Samburu ceremony that attracts warriors from near and far, all eager to perform in this important show of skill. During this competitive event, other warriors wait to take their turn to perform, chanting and humming all the time, raising their voices in response to particularly spectacular vertical leaps. Use of medicinal plants by the Samburu has been a traditional part of their culture and central to their survival for centuries. This knowledge is however dwindling rapidly due to pressures on the environment and modernisation. The results of the Earthwatch project will restore this knowledge, supported with scientific verification, back into the hands of the community and will allow sustainable, long-term use of the resources.
