John Moore, who teaches geological sciences at the Burlington County Institute of Technology's Medford campus, spent two weeks in northern Canada along with 11 volunteers from around the world to participate in a climate study. Moore was chosen for the trip by the Earthwatch Institute, an international nonprofit organization that sends scientists, teachers and volunteers into the field to study the environment.

Everyone knows the germs in hospitals are getting more resistant to penicillin and other therapeutic drugs. But what about garden-variety bacteria out there in the fields, suburban lawns and woods? The study is funded by a $15,000 grant from Earthwatch Institute's Student Challenge Awards Program, making the two-week study among the first of its kind.

Ken Balcomb, director of the Center for Whale Research and Earthwatch scientist for Whales and Dolphins of Abaco Island and Orca, was cited in a recent New Scientist article about the impact of sonar on cetaceans ("Whales Get the Bends," New Scientist, December 15, 2001). A new theoretical model developed by the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program demonstrates how low-frequency sonar can damage whale tissues by interfering with gas exchange during deep dives. Balcomb found evidence of unusual hemorrhaging in some of 16 whales that washed up on Abaco Island last year, the day after the Navy conducted sonar exercises in the area.

Dr. Peter Reynolds, veteran Earthwatch researcher and a leading experimental archaeologist in Britain, died in September and is honored in a Guardian obituary. Working with Earthwatch early in his distinguished career, Reynolds was the principal investigator of Butser Ancient Farm Project in 1976, then The Swazi Farm Experiment and Aegean Coastal Survey in the 1980s. He is remembered fondly for his ingenuity and warmth by all of those at Earthwatch that worked with him.
