Former Earthwatch editor Mark Cherrington was featured in The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2001, a collection of essays by prominent science writers published by Houghton Mifflin Company. Cherrington’s essay, "To Save a Watering Hole," was originally published in Discover magazine. Based on the work of Dr. Reuven Yosef, ornithologist and Earthwatch scientist, the article brought international attention to bear on a critical migratory bird reserve in Eilat, Israel.

"Mark Cherrington has demonstrated very well what science writers can do," said E.O. Wilson, prominent Harvard biologist and editor of the book, "particularly writing on the environment, which has so much social importance."

"As a journalist, I stand between the scientist and you, the reader," said Cherrington, who appeared with Wilson at an informal talk and book signing at Wadsworth Books, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. "My job is to understand what the scientist is doing and saying, and boil that down and translate. Its not just telling you what they're doing, but telling you why what they’re doing matters."
