Studies led by Dr. Kathy Townsend from The University of Queensland indicate that more than 35% of the sea turtles she has studied in Australia died from eating trash.

Scientists have long thought that caterpillars that eat plant toxins were protecting themselves from predation.
But a surprising new study in Ecology Letters shows that these toxins actually render caterpillars more vulnerable to their greatest enemy of all: the parasitoids. Parasitoids include wasps and flies that lay their eggs inside the caterpillar, feasting on its tissues and killing it in the process.

Earthwatch has been monitoring the Influenza A (H1N1, also known as Swine Flu) situation very closely. As always, safety is our primary concern. At this time, Earthwatch projects are proceeding as scheduled. On May 15 we will decide the status of the teams projected to field in Mexico in late May, June and July, and will contact all impacted volunteers should any specific changes in scheduling be necessary.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed at least 40 non-fatal cases of swine flu influenza A (H1N1) in the US, 6 non-fatal cases in Canada and 26 confirmed cases with 7 fatalities in Mexico. Currently, the virus is being transmitted between humans. The WHO has not issued any travel restrictions for swine flu infected areas, however the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office recommend deferring all non-essential travel to Mexico.

A great deal of drug-related violence has recently taken place along the northern Mexico border, and the neighboring US states. Earthwatch has been monitoring the violence closely since it began because we run two projects in Mexico, Tracking Baja’s Black Sea Turtles (Baja region) and Mexican Megafauna (San Miguel de Allende)—which are not located in the area affected by the violence.
