Earthwatch Institute, Maynard, MA, August 21, 2007 - HSBC Bank, N.A., in conjunction with the grand opening of its newest Florham Park branch, has provided a grant to Earthwatch Institute to support two local teachers in joining one of their research expeditions. Teachers from the Florham Park, East Hanover and Hanover Park school districts are eligible to apply to work with a scientist as volunteers on the Bahamian Reef Survey Earthwatch expedition and examine the impacts of climate change in this delicate part of the Caribbean. In addition, the selected teachers will communicate with his/her students "Live from the Field" while on the expedition November 17-24, 2007.
"The best part of this expedition was the hands-on application of research techniques in the water", said Greg Rublee, who received an Earthwatch Educator Fellowship to join the Bahamian Reef Survey expedition this past June, "Applying these techniques meant overcoming real obstacles and challenges in the field. These experiences will help me pass that understanding along to others with greater clarity."
Fellowship recipients are chosen via an application process. The Fellowship covers all costs including a travel stipend for transportation to the research site. Fellows also receive a $1,000 award for their school to be used towards a local conservation project. Applications will be accepted until September 7th. To apply, visit www.earthwatch.org/fellowships/hsbc.html, or contact (800)-776-0188 ext. 207.
